Where I speak my truth

Where I Shop for Plus Size Clothes in SA

Where I Shop for Plus Size Clothes in SA

Fashion is my number one. I love clothes, I love shopping, I love looking at and feeling clothes, shoes and accessories, I always have. There are at least a hundred people walking around who think I gave them a dirty look and “upped and downed” them because I was looking at their outfit and they caught me in the act.

My idea of fun or “doing something” is shopping, always. So I like to think I know a thing or two about all of our retailers and where to get what (well what works for me anyway).

As much as I say my idea of fun is shopping, I don’t always leave the shops very happy because it is still hard to find really trendy options for plus size ladies, sometimes it’s even difficult to find basics, but our retailers are trying. We just need a few more options.

Moving on to my list, this is where I shop mostly.

MILADYS

I always pop into Miladys because more often than not I find something I fall in love with. Their sales are also so worth it. They pretty much have everything you could need under one roof, clothing, shoes, accessories, pajamas, swimwear, formal and casual wear.

What I buy

  • Jeans/jeggings
  • Dresses – because they are always a nice length
  • Tees, most of my current tees are from Miladys and they often have sales where you buy two and get R50 off.
  • Bras
  • Basics such as vests

Size range

30 – 50 although not every style goes up to a size 50.

DONNA

Since Donna’s re-brand I have been LOVING the brand. They have a bit of everything so the more modern and trendy items but then also the classic garments that will appeal to the older market. Donna is the only plus size store in SA that I have seen that has stocked plus size dungarees (which I am so desperate for). I thought that was worth a mention because us bigger girls want cool clothing like dungarees but it seems it is assumed that we don’t.

What I buy

  • I have only really bought jeans from there because there is only one store that is reasonably close to me and they aren’t online yet but I try get there as often as I can and holding thumbs that they offer online shopping soon. I always browse their site and there is always loads that I want.

Size range

Fashion in sizes 14 – 28

SPREE

Spree is the devil, but the good kind (if there is such a thing). I am always browsing and I put something into my bag EVERY.DAMN.TIME. I don’t always checkout though because I don’t have Kim K’s budget. Their sizing is pretty accurate which is important for an online store.

What I buy

  •  have pretty much bought a bit of everything, a dress, a top, shoes, a handbag. I have never had an issue with quality or anything looking different to what it does in the picture.
  • I don’t have my specifics that I buy, I just buy when I see something I like.

Size range

Up to 50 for certain brands.

PEP

I would never have admitted to shopping at Pep when I was in high school. Can you remember the stigma around it? Like, ewwww, Pep, you’re so poor! I obviously don’t care where I shop anymore, as long as I love what I find and I really do find some gems at Pep. Obviously the quality isn’t guaranteed but I have never had any serious issues and have gotten a few wears out of things I have bought.

What I buy

  • Vests
  • Pajamas
  • Dresses
  • Shorts
  • Jogger pants

Size range

Up to size 46 on certain items

ACKERMANS

I almost always find something at Ackermans. Many people don’t know that they stock larger sizes but some of their stuff goes up to a size 50. They are a great option for printed items (I love me a good print) and their basic tees are cheap as chips and the quality isn’t too bad.

What I buy

  • Basic tees
  • Leggings (the ones with a thick band)
  • Handbags
  • Dresses
  • Bras
  • Shorts

JET

Jet’s Donatella range goes up to a size 50. If you want a wider variety of the Donatella range you need to go to one of the bigger stores. Their jeans aren’t always a good fit for me but they do have a great range of fashion and core denim.

What I buy

  • Formal tops
  • Denim, they sometimes have cute denim dresses and things

MR P

Good old Mr P, I do love them but I was quite disappointed when they took away the curve range. They have since added an extended range but this only goes up to a size 44 which then leaves out a lot of plus size ladies who would love to shop there because it’s trendy and affordable. The extended size range is also rather limited.

What I buy

  • Dresses
  • Tops
  • Shoes
  • Accessories (Mr P is my go-to for accessories)

Size range

Only the extended range goes up to size 44. There is a tab on the website you can click to see extended sizes only. It is also only the Oakridge brand that offers extended sizes.

WOOLWORTHS

I enjoy Woolworths but it’s not somewhere I visit often unless I am looking for something specific like jeans or a good quality basic. I really love their clothes but they aren’t always in my budget unless I know I am going to get proper wear out of it, so something like jeans.

What I buy

  • Denim so jeans/jeggings/jackets/shorts
  • Basic tees

Size range

I am not 100% sure on this but I have found their sizes to be quite generous.

PnP CLOTHING

I have shopped at PnP Clothing so much recently because their summer stock has been beautiful and really trendy. Forget everything you used to know about PnP Clothing (I still have that image in my mind of polar fleece jackets and fuddy duddy floral prints) but honestly they have stepped up their fashion game.

What I buy

  • I don’t go there for specifics, I like to browse and I usually end up with quite an arm full of clothes to try on.

Size range

Goes up to an XXXL which is around a size 44 depending on the style and cut.

Because I love and work in fashion I really appreciate quality, good fabrics are the best but I generally don’t spend a lot on clothes because I chop and change so often. One day I will love a certain colour and the next I am completely over it. I will only spend on timeless pieces and ones that I know I will not get sick of seeing.

Where are your favourite places to shop? What shops/online shops should I be checking out?
